Sanyal is born in Katihar on 12th April 1953. He is trained in the dhrupad style of vocal music of the Dagar tradition, descendants of Haridas Dagar, who lived in the fifteenth century and trained the legendary Tansen.
Between 1963 and 1975, he received his training in Dhrupad under Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and Ustad Zia Fariddudin Dagar in Mumbai, India. He received an M. A. in philosophy from Mumbai University and a Master in Music from Banaras Hindu University, securing the gold medal. He completed his Ph.D. in Musicology from the same University, 1980 under the supervision of Prof. Prem Lata Sharma.
Ritwik Sanyal is a Professor and has served as Head of the Department of Vocal Music and also Dean of Faculty of Performing Arts Banaras Hindu University. He also composes dhrupad lyrics. An outstanding Dhrupad Singer ,Guru ,Writer, Professor and Academician and needs no words to prove his musicianship . During the last 33 years he has immensely and extensively contributed to the propagation of dhrupad in almost every part of India and globe.
He has assimilated the Dagarvani tradition of Dhrupad and evolved a distinctive style of his own in the rendering of Dhrupad. He has specialized in advanced technique of Alap - Jod - Jhala, laykari, voice culture and pedagogy both traditional and institutional. Apart from the judicious blend of two Ustads , Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar , Ritwik has his own distinctive quality . Alap and the subtle nuances of the raga are his forte. Ritwik has assimilated the characteristics and finesses of the dagar tradition and evolved an original style in performance that highlights several musical layers of variations of evoking sublimity and shanta rasa throughout the performance . Rhythmic intensification and interplay of the song text of dhrupad adds to his presentation. He has also created new dimensions of dhrupad performance such as Sanskrit verses, modern poetry, inclusion of cello and vichitra vina with voice etc.
